At Wieland Orthodontics, we believe every tooth matters. Extractions are never our first instinct, but in certain situations they are genuinely the best path to a healthy, stable, and beautiful result.

There are two primary reasons Dr. Wieland may recommend an extraction as part of your treatment plan:

Severe Crowding

When there simply isn't enough room in the jaw for all of your teeth to align properly, removing one or more teeth creates the space needed for everything else to come together beautifully. Trying to fit too many teeth into too small a space without extraction often leads to compromised results or instability over time.

Significant Bite Issues

Sometimes the way the upper and lower jaws meet (your bite or occlusion) is significantly off. In these cases, strategically removing a tooth can give Dr. Wieland the flexibility to move teeth in ways that correct the bite and improve long-term jaw function, not just aesthetics.

Is an extraction right for you?

Before recommending an extraction, Dr. Wieland completes a thorough evaluation of your full orthodontic records, which includes photographs and X-rays. This full picture allows us to assess how your upper jaw (maxilla) and lower jaw (mandible) have developed, where your teeth currently sit, and where they need to finish for an idea result.

The Extraction Process

We understand that the idea of having a tooth removed can feel daunting. Your dentist, or the local oral surgeon, will use local anesthesia to ensure you do not feel any sharp pain during the procedure. You may feel some pressure or a sense of pushing, but you should not feel anything sharp.

You may also experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort after the procedure. On average, this resolves within three to seven days. Following your aftercare instructions carefully makes a significant difference in how smoothly you heal.

Aftercare Tips

  • Eat soft foods like yogurt, soup, and mashed potatoes for the first few days
  • Drink plenty of water but do not use a straw, as suction can disrupt healing
  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek in 20-minute intervals
  • Avoid smoking, as it significantly slows healing
  • Brush carefully around the extraction site, following any rinsing instructions provided.

Dr. Wieland and the team at Wieland Orthodontics in East Moline are here to walk you through every step of your orthodontic treatment, including whether an extraction is right for you. Let us know if you have any questions!
